What NTRP level am I? A plain-English guide

Short answer: NTRP rates players from 1.5 to 7.0. Most recreational league players are 3.0 to 4.0. If you can sustain a rally and serve with some pace, you are likely 3.0 to 3.5.

The National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) is the rating the USTA uses for leagues. It runs from 1.5 (brand new) to 7.0 (touring pro) in half-point steps.

Quick guide

  • 2.5: You can rally slowly with a partner of similar ability and are learning to keep the ball in play.
  • 3.0: Consistent on medium-paced shots, but you lack control when you try for power or direction.
  • 3.5: You have directional control, are starting to come to net, and your serve has some reliability.
  • 4.0: Dependable strokes with depth and direction, you can use lobs, overheads and volleys with some success.
  • 4.5: You use power and spin, can handle pace, and have a serve that can win points.
  • 5.0: You anticipate well, hit winners, and have a real weapon to build points around.
