NTRP vs UTR vs Rally Rating: what is the difference?

Short answer: NTRP is a USTA self-and-computer rating in half-point levels. UTR is a 1 to 16.5 scale based on match scores worldwide. Rally Rating is our local Elo rating that updates after each match.

Three ratings, three jobs.

NTRP

Used by USTA leagues. It groups players into half-point bands (3.0, 3.5, 4.0) so league teams are fair. Updates happen at year end.

UTR

Universal Tennis Rating uses actual game scores from sanctioned matches around the world, on a 1.0 to 16.5 scale. Popular with juniors and college recruiting.

Rally Rating

Our local rating, based on the Elo system used in chess. Everyone starts at 1500. Beat someone rated higher and you gain more; lose to someone rated lower and you drop more. The margin of victory counts a little, and new players move faster so your rating settles within about ten matches. It updates the moment both players confirm a score.

Your profile shows all three, so you always know where you stand.
